This is a very common problem with Outlook 2007 and the solution is very simple
Run this command at the command prompt of Windows
outlook.exe /resetnavpane
Problem solved.
This one of the many switches that Outlook have that controls how Outlook behave.
There are many interesting switches that come with Outlook, use this command to know what switches are there and their uses.
outlook.exe /switch
